New Comprehensive Plan for Improvement of
Student Achievement Unveiled
July 29, 2002

    A press conference was held on Monday, July 29th, to unveil the district´s new comprehensive plan to improve student achievement.  Staff presented the results of an extensive evaluation of the current instructional program and outlined the plan that has been developed.  The plan includes curriculum that is aligned to high academic standards, extensive staff development for both teachers and administrators, and a process for interim assessments of student achievement at regular intervals throughout the school year.  Please find below a brief outline of the presentation which was provided by several staff members and the President of the Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers (PVFT).  For more information please contact Terry McHenry at 786-2140, or through e-mail to Terry_McHenry ~at~pvusd.net

What Have We Been Doing?

  • Used outside evaluators to review half the schools in the District covering the delivery of instruction, content, and assessment.
  • Analyzed a variety of data in every schoolIdentified barriers preventing us from being effective
  • Developed a coordinated overall plan for the District to improve academic achievement
  • Developed action plans for every school to carry out the District Plan

The Plan Includes

  • Curriculum based on State Standards for all core subjects
  • Staff development in the delivery of the curriculum - coordinated with English Language Development
  • Interim Assessments to gauge progress
  • Coordinated focus of supplemental programs
  • Ongoing monitoring and accountability at all levels

Student Attendance

  • Students can´t learn if they are not in school
  • Have implemented a comprehensive attendance program
  • Efforts by every school
  • Monitored monthly showing ongoing success

Curriculum

  • Adopted State Standards in language arts, math, science and social studies
  • Have adopted textbooks based on these standards
  • Teaching at grade level with higher expectations
  • English Language Development - in both concentrated and integrated programs
  • Providing English instruction in English
  • All teachers have been trained to teach English Language Learners
  • Students will receive the same grade level curriculum as in any other school in California

Staff Development

  • Ongoing and consistent staff training
  • New Teacher Project
  • Standards Based Curriculum
  • More focused English instruction
  • Site Administrator Training

Assessment

  • Interim standards based assessment 2 to 3 times per year based on content districtwide
  • Assessing reading, writing and math
  • Will be able to modify and adjust instruction during the year
  • Still giving State Standard Test and High School Exit Exam at end of the year

Supplemental Programs

  • Additional funding and programs provided for students with specific needs
  • Wide range of programs including special education, migrant education and extended learning
  • Providing instructional services, support services and enrichment
  • Aligned and coordinated with regular program
  • Expanding parent involvement

Monitoring and Accountability

    Everyone is accountable:
  • Teachers - Measure student progress
  • Site Administration - Directs and Monitors Site Action Plans
  • Zones - Coordinate and Monitor delivery of services in each zone
  • District - Delivers support services and monitors results

The Results

  • NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND: We have a comprehensive plan with the ingredients to make it work. We are giving teachers and administrators the tools to do the job. We will improve academic performance across the District.
