Spending Freeze
PVUSD Has Issued a Spending Freeze to Help Address the State’s Fiscal Crisis

Due to the recent serious cuts initiated by the State, all purchase expenditures are frozen. All funds are subject to review, until further direction comes from the State. Exceptions include Stores Orders and certain Palace Office Supply orders, and other purchases specially approved by Assistant/Associate Superintendents. Also, there is a district budget freeze Q&A document available at the end of the memo.

The Pajaro Valley Unified School District is conducting a district-wide parent survey to help our schools know what parents think and feel about their child's school experiences. You may take the survey online by selecting the Elementary or Secondary Parent Survey. These surveys will be available from January 22 – February 12, 2008. Take one survey per student and thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey!

Los Angeles, CA – The Latino Family Literacy Project today announced that it has selected the Pajaro Valley Unified School District in Watsonville, California, to receive its 1st Annual LATFAM Parent Involvement Award.

CDE Spotlight Project Sweet

For the last year the PVUSD Technology Services Department has been implementing the Student Writing Enhanced by Educational Technology or SWEET Program. The Program focuses on integrating technology to support the middle school writing curriculum. At the close of our first year we have seen a tremendous improvement not only in student achievement (as seen on the CST) but in student motivation as well. For example participating seventh grade students made a 22% improvement on the California State Writing Applications test this last year. Pajaro Valley Unified District Welcomes a New Deputy Superintendent

The Pajaro Valley Unified School District is pleased to welcome Mr. Ricardo Medina as the new Deputy Superintendent.  The Board of Trustees approved his appointment on Wednesday evening, September 19th, 2007.

Enhancing Education
PVUSD wins a second Enhancing Education Through Technology grant

PVUSD was informed that a second round of the federal technology integration grant (EETT - Enhancing Education Through Technology) will be provided to the district and that the application had ranked #1 in the region. The grant has been fully funded at $323,872.00 and will directly affect three schools in the North Zone: Valencia, Bradley and Aptos Junior.  These three schools will receive new and upgraded technology for the classrooms, training for the teachers and additional technical and curricular support for their language arts programs. This grant will enable the Technology Services Department to continue its highly successful work with the SWEET program.

Five New School staff Presented a Workshop at the Western Region Conference of the William Glasser Institute

These five New School staff presented a workshop at the Western Region Conference of the William Glasser Institute.  The workshop was entitled “The Marathon Metaphor”, and included a humorous skit demonstrating how New School uses Dr. Glasser’s Choice Theory to help students recover from trauma, learn more productive habits, and become successful in their job, which is school.

Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates have been selected to conduct the search for the Deputy Superintendent position. As part of the search process they will be interviewing several different groups of stakeholders to create a leadership profile, the characteristics we would want for the person in this position.
